The Culinary Timeline is a side-project that I've been working on since October. I'm hoping to have most of it complete by the end of January, with any luck. Until then, updates around here will be weekly, rather than twice weekly. Do stay tuned.

Book Review: “Judgment of Paris” by George Taber

For the American wine connoisseur, George Taber’s “Judgment of Paris” reads like a favorite movie. Although we may already know the ending before we have even read the first page, watching the plot unfold provides great enjoyment nonetheless. “Judgment” examines the historic 1976 tasting that pitted a handful of upstart California wines against the greatest wines of France, resulting in a stunning upset that created an instant paradigm shift among the wine community.

    Paraduxx Release Party

Tonight I attended the release party at Paraduxx Winery. They have a beautiful facility, just a touch north of the Stags Leap District on the Silverado Trail. For me, the centerpiece of the property is their fermentation room, which is a stunning rotunda with an incredible domed wooden ceiling. As I had kind of prefaced in my posting for June 3, I stopped by Unti, Ridge and Mauritson. These three wineries are all within a couple miles of each other, right near the intersection of Lytton Springs Road and Dry Creek Road (which is actually very close to the Hwy 101-Lytton Springs exit).

I have visited Unti once before, have been to Mauritson a few times, and have been to Ridge [... read more ...]

        Thoughts on a Zin tasting…

I’m arranging a Zinfandel blind tasting next month, and I’ve compiled my short list of wines to include in the flight. Many of these wines have been personal favorites over the years, such as the Ridge and the Grgich Hills. Others, like the Unti, is a more recent discovery, but one that was so memorable that I’m really looking forward to seeing how it compares.

For me, six wines is the ideal number for a blind tasting — it provides a nice sampling of the varietal, but it doesn’t become too overwhelming. Naturally, I will [... read more ...]
